Alien ReAction Figure Set by Super 7 / Funko
The delayed Alien ReAction figure set has finally been released by Super 7. The six figure set is based on the 3 & 3/4" line Kenner planned on releasing in 1979. This review will feature the standard 5 figure set plus the limited Clear Alien figure.
Packaging :
The card design resembles the look of the 18" Alien figure Kenner released in 1979. The bright blue really makes them pop. The figures have their own design for the front while the card backs are all the same. I'd prefer Ash having a photo of the actor Ian Holm who portrayed him in the film instead of a photo of the Alien. The bubble on my Dallas figure is very loose and partially unsealed.
Sculpt :
All of the sculpts capture the late 70's Kenner style perfectly. The Alien actually looks like the 18" Kenner version shrunk down.
Paint :
Unfortunately, some of the paint applications are a bit sloppy. Ash, Dallas and Ripley are the figures that suffer from this. The cuffs on their shirts and pants are a bit off and not painted entirely. Ripley's hairline isn't painted where it meets her skin. The paint on the Dallas and Ash figures face resembles more of a custom figure than what would come from a factory. There also seems to be one coat of painting when they painted the skin tones. The Alien and Kane figures are a different story. Their paint applications are near perfect. The paint on the head of standard alien glows. I wish the flesh tones were molded in that color plastic instead of being painted over darker plastic.
Articulation :
There are 5 points of articulation on the humans and 6 on the Alien. The Alien tail can move and a lever on his head make the inner teeth emerge.
Accessories :
The Alien comes with a removable transparent dome and has extendable jaws
Ripley comes with a Flame Thrower
Ash comes with a Motion Detector
Dallas comes with a Flame Thrower
Kane comes with a removable helmet and transparent visor
All of the accessories have the vintage Kenner look.
Price :
The standard 5 figure set is $75. The 6 figure set was $100. Here is an explanation from Super 7 about the pricing changes : "Our original SRP was $19.95, and the 5 figure set was $100. Funko will be able to produce in much larger quantities and wider distribution, and has a $14.95 SRP, which is $75 for the set. We are aware of the discrepancy in price with the new agreement, so there is a additional, secret figure that will be included in the Super7 pre-orders that will be available only for those who pre-ordered sets of Alien from us, and will not be available anywhere else. (And preorders are long since closed.) We think it will be a nice thank you to everyone who believed in this project and pre-ordered ahead of time, being part of the excitement of the release of this long-awaited line of figures". The secret figure is the clear Alien. It is the standard Alien figure molded in a translucent gray plastic. The inner teeth are silver instead of white and the details on the skull are silver instead of the glow paint. A 5 figure set with black backer cards are $75 from Super 7. The exact set reviewed can be obtained on the secondary market (like ebay) in the $300 range. The clear Alien sells on average for $125.
The Verdict :
Even though there are some flaws, I still think this line is a winner. I expect Super 7 and Funko to work out the bugs with series 2 when they are released.
