Mr. Hush Weekend Of Fear 10-22-10
I found out about this convention by accident reading online it was the last convention appearance of Steve Dash. I had a poster signed by other Part 2 cast members and wanted Steve to sign it as well. Steve played Jason for most of the film in Friday The 13th Part 2. I met Steve last year at Monster Mania Conn and he was the first to sign my poster. The marker went out while he was signing leaving an indentation in the poster. The poster was ruined accidentally and Steve gave me some 8x10's to make up for it and promised to sign another poster free of charge if I ever see him again. I planned on having Betsy Palmer (Jason's mother) to sign the poster at that con, but no one had the poster I had for sale. A few months later, I got another poster and started the project again. I had 3 actors from the film sign it at another convention. I still needed Betsy and Steve on the poster. The con was 2 1/2 hours away. With other horror actors and vendors announced, we made the drive.
You're probably asking who the hell Mr. Hush is. That's what I did. Mr. Hush is an independent horror film that the con is based around. The movie was to premier on Saturday. We arrived at the Best Western in Matamoras, PA on Friday. There was a large amount of cars in the parking lot which was a good sign.
We walked in the lobby and it was like a ghost town. Admission was $20 a person. We then went in the dealers room and there were was a whopping 4 dealers there. The autograph area had most of the people that were supposed to be there present. We talked to Steve about this being his last convention and he confirmed it. He said at 65 he was all done and has picked up more acting gigs along the way and concentrates on that. Steve said Betsy is close to 90 and she is retiring as well. Steve was about to sign the poster and saw Warrington Gillette's name on it. I said in a serious tone that he was the real Jason and the look on Steve's face was priceless. I told him I was joking and went on a rant on how much he hated Warrington. I never get sick of this story. Steve told me the man listed in the credits as Jason (Warrington) was signing photos of Steve claiming it was him. Warrington was mostly Jason unmasked in the film at the end. Warrington lied saying he could do stunts and was replaced by Steve. Steve said he confronted Warrington by putting him against the wall telling him to never sign as him again. Steve said he went to his table and took every 8x10 off his table that featured him and left pics of Warrington on the table. Steve also signed my machete and seriously was not happy to sign his name next to Warrington's.
Betsy Palmer was walking around talking to other guests. She then came by the table and chatted with us. She apologized for leaving and said how she was talking with other guests because there was barely anyone at the con (10 people or so). Betsy is such a nice woman and seemed really happy when I told her I wanted her signature on the top of the poster. Laura told Betsy she just watching Friday The 13th Part 2 last night and Betsy told her how sweet that was. Betsy insisted on hugging her in the photos we took. She genuinely cared about her fans and is a great person.
The only thing we cared about at the con was the Friday The 13th question and answer session at 9 PM.
It was 6:30 and we just decided to leave. I've been too a few Q&A's with the guests and read the Crystal Lake Memories book, so there wasn't a need to hand around 2 1/2 hours for that. We went to eat before leaving. They had a seafood buffet at the hotel for only $57 a person. That was an easy pass and hit IHOP on the way home.
I have to say the convention was a bust. $20 was excessive for admission price considering what you got. I really felt for the dealers as I'm sure they didn't make much with the lack of people present and being in a separate room from the guests. Then again, I don't think the guests did overly well. I saw Brian O'Halloran (of Clerks and Mallrats fame) on the way out. I've seen him at 3 conventions and all 3 times his table was empty. Poor guy. If it weren't for Steve and Betsy, we wouldn't have made the trip. They were great so it made up for the rather uneventful event.
